What Are Some Reasons to Volunteer?
- Help a parent learn how to read so they can help their children.
- Help an adult prepare to take the HiSET (high school equivalency test).
- Help someone improve their skills so they can get a better job.
- Help newcomers earn to speak English.
- Make a difference in your community.
When Are Volunteers Needed?
Volunteers are needed for daytime and/or evening sessions, depending on the particular program. Some programs need volunteers for weekend class times as well.
How Much of a Time Commitment is Needed?
The time commitment varies with each program. A typical minimum time commitment for a volunteer is only 2-5 hours per week over a period of 3-12 months.
How Do I Start Volunteering?
Online: Click on Find A Program to begin searching for a local program online. Follow the instructions to complete your customized search and use the contact list to call the appropriate programs and make an appointment with their volunteer coordinator.
By Phone: Call the Massachusetts Adult Literacy Hotline at 1-800-447-8844. Hotline staff will provide you with several referrals to appropriate local programs. Next, call the programs to make an appointment to visit the program or to sign up for their volunteer training.
